Sweden Field Notes

General

Sweden is where Scandinavian design, historic charm, and nature come together. Its capital, Stockholm, is one of my favorite cities in northern Europe. The city is spread across 14 islands connected by elegant bridges, giving it one of the most beautiful settings of any European city. Although Sweden is an expensive destination, a few days is enough to experience Stockholm's highlights, and it combines easily with nearby cities including Copenhagen, Tallinn, or Helsinki.

Stockholm

2–3 days recommended

Stockholm is a city of 14 islands where medieval old towns, royal palaces and design-forward neighborhoods all sit on the water. It really surprised me as one of the prettiest capitals that I've visited in Europe. It is very easy to explore on foot, public transport and by ferry. It felt like a very international and livable city (despite the high cost of living). I would recommend spending 2 to 3 days to fully explore the Stockholm.

Malmö

1 to 2 days or a day trip from Copenhagen

Malmö is Sweden's diverse, design-forward third city, right at the country's southern tip. It's actually closer to Copenhagen than Stockholm, just ~40 minutes by train over the Øresund Bridge. Therefore, many people fold it into a Denmark visit as a day trip (as I did back in 2021). It is a relaxed mix of medieval old town, modern architecture and multicultural food.

The best way to visit is a day trip from Copenhagen or spend 1 to 2 days to fully explore the city. It was an interesting first visit to Sweden for me, but not a must-visit destination by any means

Other Places to Consider

Sweden is a huge country (by European standards) that stretches deep into the Arctic. There is plenty more to explore beyond Stockholm and Malmö:
